đź“° Amul Expands Global Footprint: Launches Milk in Spain through Partnership with COVAP

Madrid, Spain / New Delhi — India’s dairy powerhouse, the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), has officially launched Amul Milk in Spain, partnering with leading Spanish cooperative COVAP. This landmark entry marks the beginning of Amul’s expansion into European dairy markets, with plans targeting Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and beyond.

The official launch event was held at the Embassy of India in Madrid and attended by senior Indian and Spanish officials, including Ambassador Dinesh K. Patnaik, representatives from Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, and leadership from COVAP and GCMMF.

Amul’s first offering in Spain is its Gold full-cream milk, available in long-shelf-life tetra packs (6 months), beginning in Madrid and Barcelona, with subsequent rollouts planned in Málaga, Valencia, Alicante, Seville, CĂłrdoba, and Lisbon, Portugal.

🥛 Product & Expansion Strategy

The launch product—Amul Gold full cream milk—is packaged in long-life tetra packs with a six-month shelf life, making it ideal for modern distribution networks. It will initially be available in Madrid and Barcelona, followed by a rollout to Málaga, Valencia, Alicante, Seville, Córdoba, and Lisbon (Portugal).

Amul also plans to expand into Germany, Italy, and Switzerland, furthering its European dairy strategy after its success. Debut with four milk variants: Taaza, Gold, Shakti, and Slim n Trim.

“This collaboration between two cooperatives supports dairy farmers in both nations. It combines COVAP’s advanced processing capabilities with Amul’s trusted global reputation,” said Ricardo Delgado, President of COVAP.

This international expansion was envisioned by Dr. Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of GCMMF, with strong support from the Chairman, Vice Chairman, and Board of Kaira Milk Union, underlining Amul’s cohesive leadership commitment to global growth.

Amul’s international portfolio is growing rapidly. In thUSS., Amul launched four variants of milk—Taaza, Gold, Shakti, and Slim’ n Trim—and its cheese and ice cream products are already available in Canada.

Backed by 36 lakh farmers, GCMMF is the world’s largest farmer-owned dairy cooperative, handling over 12 billion litres of milk annually through 112 dairy plants. With a turnover of ₹80,000 crore, Amul is globally recognised as the strongest dairy and food brand.

At IIFT, Mehta also emphasised the role of cooperatives in rural empowerment and encouraged graduates to explore ethical international trade, focusing on health, nutrition, and well-being.

COVAP, Amul’s Spanish partner, processes over 400 million litres of milk annually, exporting to more than 30 countries, including the US and Australia.

This strategic Indo-Spanish collaboration marks a milestone in India’s dairy diplomacy, setting the stage for further growth in India’s dairy exports to Europe.
