Dairy Sector Remains Backbone of Rural Economy: AP Minister Atchannaidu

Dairying as a Stable Rural Income Engine

The dairy sector continues to play a decisive role in sustaining India’s rural economy, Andhra Pradesh Agriculture Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu said while addressing the Southern Dairy and Food Conclave 2026 in Kozhikode, Kerala.

The minister highlighted that dairying offers daily and predictable income, especially for small and marginal farmers. Unlike seasonal crops, milk production provides regular cash flow, which strengthens household financial stability across rural regions.

In Andhra Pradesh, animal husbandry has emerged as a dependable livelihood option, particularly for women-led self-help groups. The sector supports income diversification, reduces migration pressures, and expands employment opportunities in villages.

Women’s Empowerment and Nutritional Security

Atchannaidu underlined that dairying plays a dual role by empowering women and improving nutritional security. Women form the backbone of dairy operations, from animal care to milk collection. Their participation enhances financial inclusion and decision-making at the household level. Beyond livelihoods, the sector contributes significantly to national nutrition outcomes by improving access to milk and dairy products, especially in rural and semi-urban areas.

Technology and Policy Support Key to Future Growth

The minister stressed that strengthening the dairy ecosystem requires coordinated action by both state and central governments. Adoption of modern technology, scientific feeding practices, genetic improvement, and better supply-chain integration are essential to improve productivity and farmer profitability.

He praised the Indian Dairy Association (IDA) for promoting science-led innovations that enhance sustainability and commercial viability across the dairy value chain. According to him, industry platforms such as the Southern Dairy and Food Conclave play a crucial role in knowledge exchange and sectoral growth.

Industry Leadership Recognised

During the event, the Indian Dairy Association felicitated Nara Bhuvaneshwari, Vice-Chairperson and Managing Director of Heritage Foods Limited. Atchannaidu described her as a leader who combines business excellence with social commitment.

He noted her contributions to education, healthcare, women’s empowerment, youth development, and disaster relief. The recognition, he said, reflects the importance of responsible leadership in building a resilient dairy industry.

Outlook: Dairy’s Strategic Role in Rural India

As agriculture faces climate volatility and market uncertainty, dairying remains a stabilising force for rural households. With policy backing, technology adoption, and inclusive growth models, the sector is well-positioned to remain a cornerstone of India’s rural economy.
