Cooperative Strengthens Farmer Participation and Market Reach
Northeast India’s largest dairy cooperative, Purabi Dairy, marked the pre-Magh Bihu celebrations at its Panjabari dairy processing plant in Guwahati, highlighting a year of strong operational growth and an expanding dairy footprint across Assam.
Officials of the West Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Ltd (WAMUL) said the past year witnessed steady gains in milk procurement, production capacity and farmer participation, reinforcing Purabi’s position as a key driver of Assam’s organised dairy sector.
Expanding Cooperative Network Across Assam
Purabi Dairy reported a rise in the number of Dairy Cooperative Societies (DCS) during the year. The cooperative network has also strengthened significantly in Upper Assam, enabling more farmers to join the organised milk supply chain and access stable income opportunities.
“Purabi Dairy’s growth is firmly rooted in a farmer-first approach,” said WAMUL Managing Director Sameer Kumar Parida. “By improving procurement systems, expanding cooperative coverage and strengthening market access, we are making dairy farming a more reliable livelihood for rural families across Assam.”
Product Diversification Drives Market Growth
During the year, Purabi expanded its value-added product portfolio, including the launch of Purabi Traditional Indian Sweets, which received a positive consumer response. Demand for flavoured milk and ice cream remained strong, while UHT milk enabled the cooperative to reach distant and emerging markets.
A strengthened distribution network has widened Purabi’s market presence across Assam, ensuring better availability and consistent supply to consumers.
Strengthening Last-Mile Delivery in Urban Markets
In Guwahati, several new Purabi Milk Booths were opened under partnerships with the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) and Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA). These initiatives have enhanced last-mile delivery while supporting local entrepreneurship.
Despite expanding consumer outreach, officials reiterated that Purabi’s core mission remains rural development. Capacity building, assured milk procurement, timely payments and technical support continue to help farmers improve productivity and income stability.
Infrastructure Expansion Plans Ahead
Looking forward, Purabi Dairy is preparing for its next phase of growth with new milk processing plants planned in Silchar, Jorhat and Dibrugarh. These facilities will boost local procurement, reduce transportation costs and support region-specific dairy development in Barak Valley and Upper Assam.
Celebrating Magh Bihu With Farmers at the Centre
The pre-Magh Bihu event featured traditional Assamese dishes prepared using Purabi dairy products, along with cultural performances reflecting the harvest spirit. Media and guests acknowledged the cooperative’s consistent role in linking rural producers with urban consumers through a transparent, farmer-centric model.
As Magh Bihu symbolises gratitude and prosperity, Purabi Dairy reaffirmed its commitment to building a self-reliant, sustainable dairy ecosystem in Assam, benefiting farmers while delivering quality nutrition to households across the state.
