StoneX Gains New Zealand Approval for Dairy Price Risk Management

StoneX Expands Dairy Risk Management in New Zealand

StoneX Financial Pty Ltd (SFA), a subsidiary of StoneX Group Inc., has received approval from New Zealand’s Financial Markets Authority (FMA) to offer milk price risk management solutions to retail industry participants in the country.

The approval marks an expansion of StoneX’s agricultural risk management services into one of the world’s most important dairy-producing markets. The company will provide dairy farmers with tools designed to manage exposure to milk price volatility, improve income certainty and support more effective financial planning.

Milk prices can fluctuate significantly due to changes in global dairy demand, commodity markets, exchange rates and supply conditions. Greater access to hedging instruments can therefore help producers manage financial uncertainty and make longer-term business decisions with greater confidence.

Focus on Sharemilkers

A key focus of StoneX’s initiative will be sharemilkers, who have historically had limited access to sophisticated milk price hedging solutions despite often carrying significant financial exposure to dairy market movements.

Sharemilkers play an important role in New Zealand’s dairy industry by operating farms and sharing production and revenue arrangements with farm owners. Greater access to risk management tools could help these businesses manage price fluctuations and improve resilience.

Liam Fenton, Global Head of Dairy & Food Group at StoneX, said the company aims to make sophisticated risk management more accessible and practical for producers.

Digital Platform to Simplify Hedging

To encourage adoption across the sector, StoneX has developed a dedicated digital platform for dairy price risk management. The platform is available on both mobile and desktop, with an emphasis on making the hedging process easier to understand and use.

The platform provides farmers with access to product information, pricing and risk management tools in an intuitive format. This is designed to help producers evaluate their options and make decisions based on their individual business requirements.

The move reflects a broader trend toward digitalisation in agricultural commodity risk management, where technology is increasingly being used to make financial tools more accessible to primary producers.

Supporting Financial Planning and Resilience

StoneX said the new capabilities could help dairy businesses strengthen financial resilience and improve their ability to plan investments. By managing a portion of their exposure to milk price fluctuations, farmers can potentially gain greater visibility over future revenues.

Matt Manning, Vice President of Commodity Derivatives at StoneX, highlighted the importance of these tools for sharemilkers and other dairy producers who remain highly exposed to market volatility.

The company believes improved access to hedging solutions can support more effective financial planning while enabling farmers to focus on operating and expanding their businesses.

Importance for New Zealand’s Dairy Industry

New Zealand is a major participant in global dairy markets, with its dairy sector heavily connected to international commodity prices and export demand. As market conditions become increasingly dynamic, risk management is becoming an important consideration for producers.

StoneX’s new licence strengthens its ability to serve New Zealand dairy businesses and broadens the range of agricultural hedging services available to the sector.

Looking Ahead

The approval represents a significant step in StoneX’s expansion of dairy-focused financial services. By combining commodity market expertise with a farmer-oriented digital platform, the company aims to make milk price risk management more accessible across New Zealand’s dairy supply chain.

For producers and sharemilkers facing continued uncertainty in global dairy markets, easier access to hedging tools could become an increasingly important component of long-term business planning and financial resilience.
