Feed Acidulants Market Projected to Reach $5.8 Billion by 2033

The global feed acidulants market is projected to expand as livestock producers increasingly focus on feed safety, gut health, feed efficiency and alternatives that can reduce dependence on antimicrobial interventions. According to DataM Intelligence, the market was valued at US$3.79 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach US$5.80 billion by 2033, representing a compound annual growth rate of 5.7% from 2026 to 2033.

Feed acidulants are used in animal nutrition for applications including feed preservation, pH regulation and feed-quality management. Growing animal-feed production and rising demand for meat and animal protein are supporting demand for specialized feed-additive solutions.

The market is also being influenced by precision nutrition and sustainability considerations. Buyers are increasingly evaluating acidulants based on efficacy, dosage economics, formulation performance, regulatory requirements and supplier reliability rather than purchase price alone.

Propionic acid remains an important segment

The market includes several acidulant sources, including propionic acid, formic acid, citric acid, lactic acid, sorbic acid, malic acid and acetic acid.

Propionic acid represents an important commercial segment because of its role in feed preservation and its relevance to recent regulatory developments in Japan.

Different acidulants can have different applications depending on feed formulation, animal category and processing requirements. This is encouraging suppliers to develop products and formulations targeted toward specific applications.

Market covers multiple animal categories

Feed acidulants are used across poultry, ruminants, swine, aquaculture, pets, equine and other animal categories.

Nutritional and feed-management requirements vary significantly between these groups. This creates opportunities for manufacturers to develop application-specific products and demonstrate measurable outcomes related to feed efficiency, preservation and animal performance.

The market is also divided between organic and inorganic feed acidulants. Organic acid-based products are particularly relevant to applications involving feed preservation, pH management and animal nutrition.

Dry and liquid formulations

Feed acidulants are available in both dry and liquid forms. The choice between the two depends on factors such as feed-processing infrastructure, dosing systems, storage conditions and application requirements.

Liquid products can be suited to certain dosing and feed-processing systems, while dry formulations can provide advantages in handling, storage and blending.

As feed manufacturers seek greater efficiency, product selection is increasingly being considered alongside overall formulation economics and ease of use.

E-commerce creates another distribution channel

Traditional distribution channels remain important for feed acidulants, particularly where customers require technical assistance, product qualification and long-term supplier relationships.

However, e-commerce is emerging as an additional route to market, particularly for smaller producers, specialty buyers and digitally enabled procurement teams.

Suppliers considering digital distribution need to evaluate regulatory documentation, packaging, logistics, technical support, customer education and repeat-purchase potential. More technically complex products may continue to require specialist distributors or direct technical support.

Regulatory developments in Japan

Japan has introduced several developments affecting the feed-additive sector during 2026.

In August, Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries revised the regulatory treatment of certain propionic-acid-based feed products. Propionic acid, calcium propionate and sodium propionate were removed from the category of antimicrobial substance preparations, while existing ingredient standards and management requirements remain applicable.

The change also removed the feed-manufacturing-manager requirement for manufacturers using propionic-acid products, except for self-mixing farms.

Earlier in 2026, Japan continued strengthening its feed-safety framework covering domestically produced and imported feed, including requirements related to hazardous substances, manufacturing, imports, sales and use.

The country also added the use of feed additives intended to reduce methane emissions from cattle to the Japanese J-Credit methodology in February 2026. This introduces an additional sustainability-related consideration for livestock producers and feed-additive suppliers.

Major companies compete on technical capabilities

The competitive landscape includes companies such as BASF SE, Kemin Industries, dsm-firmenich, Impextraco, Perstorp Group, Nutrex, ADDCON, Corbion, Novus International and Peterlabs Holdings.

These companies operate across areas including animal nutrition, feed ingredients, specialty chemicals and nutritional solutions.

BASF provides a benchmark in organic-acid-based feed ingredients and global manufacturing capabilities. Kemin Industries focuses on specialty ingredients and animal-health and nutrition solutions, while dsm-firmenich combines nutrition, health and bioscience capabilities across multiple applications.

For customers, technical support, formulation expertise, supply consistency, regulatory compliance and application-specific solutions are becoming increasingly important factors in supplier selection.

Precision nutrition could create new opportunities

The increasing cost of feed acidulants is encouraging buyers to focus on the total economic value of products. Dosage requirements, preservation performance, feed conversion, formulation stability and measurable animal-performance outcomes can all influence purchasing decisions.

This trend could create opportunities for suppliers capable of demonstrating a clear return on investment rather than competing primarily on price.

Precision nutrition, application-specific formulations, digital procurement and sustainability-related applications are therefore expected to remain important areas of development.

Market outlook

The global feed acidulants market is expected to benefit from continued growth in animal-feed production, demand for animal protein and greater attention to feed safety and nutritional efficiency.

With the market projected to grow from US$3.79 billion in 2025 to US$5.80 billion by 2033, suppliers are likely to face increasing demand for products supported by technical evidence, regulatory compliance and measurable economic benefits.

The combination of organic acid solutions, precision nutrition, digital distribution and sustainability-focused applications could shape the next phase of development in the global feed acidulants market.
