Climate-Smart Dairy Entrepreneurship Program Launches in Maharashtra

A new climate-smart dairy entrepreneurship initiative has been launched in Maharashtra’s Vidarbha-Marathwada region to support dairy entrepreneurs, milk producer organisations and smallholder farmers.

The Climate Smart Dairy Entrepreneurship program was launched on September 28 by the Environmental Defense Fund, NDDB Dairy Services and the Marathvarhad Milk Producer Organization.

The initiative aims to build entrepreneurial capacity while promoting dairy development approaches that address both farm productivity and climate-related challenges.

Program to Train Entrepreneurs and MPO Staff

Under the program, 130 entrepreneurs and more than 300 staff members of the Milk Producer Organisation will receive training focused on climate-smart dairy development and entrepreneurship.

The training is intended to help participants understand opportunities for developing solutions relevant to smallholder dairy farmers. The initiative will focus on approaches that can contribute to improved milk productivity, farm profitability and reduced climate impacts associated with dairy farming.

The program brings together entrepreneurship development with climate-smart dairy practices, creating a framework through which local entrepreneurs can potentially develop solutions for farmers and dairy value chains.

Maharashtra Initiative Builds on Tamil Nadu Program

The Maharashtra program draws from the ongoing Climate Smart Dairy Entrepreneurship Program being implemented by the Environmental Defense Fund and Kumaraguru Institutions in Tamil Nadu.

The experience from the Tamil Nadu initiative provides a foundation for extending climate-smart dairy entrepreneurship approaches to another major dairy-producing region.

By adapting the concept to Vidarbha-Marathwada, the program seeks to develop local entrepreneurial capacity while addressing the specific needs of smallholder dairy farmers in Maharashtra.

Focus on Smallholder Dairy Farmers

Smallholder farmers are an important part of India’s dairy sector, making productivity, profitability and resource efficiency key areas for dairy development.

The Maharashtra initiative is designed to encourage participants to identify and develop solutions that can help farmers improve milk production while managing the environmental impact of dairy farming.

Speaking at the launch in Nagpur, Dr. Abhinav Gaurav, Group Lead Advisor-Sustainable Livelihoods at the Environmental Defense Fund in India, described climate-smart dairy entrepreneurship as an opportunity to address climate challenges through innovative solutions for farmers.

The approach links entrepreneurial activity with practical dairy-sector needs, potentially creating opportunities for young entrepreneurs to work on solutions across areas such as farm management, productivity and sustainability.

Linking Climate Action With Dairy Development

The initiative reflects growing attention toward the connection between climate action and dairy-sector development.

Rather than treating climate considerations separately from farm economics, the program aims to encourage solutions that address productivity, profitability and environmental impact together.

Training both entrepreneurs and MPO staff could also help strengthen the ability of milk producer organisations to identify and support climate-smart opportunities within their farmer networks.

With 130 entrepreneurs and more than 300 MPO staff members targeted for training, the program is expected to create a broader network of participants working around climate-smart dairy entrepreneurship in the Vidarbha-Marathwada region.

The initiative represents an effort to combine entrepreneurship development, farmer support and climate-smart dairy practices, building on experience from an existing program in Tamil Nadu.
