Scientists from India, France, Japan and the United States have received the 2026 Ig Nobel Prize in Chemistry for studying an unusual source of nutrition: protein crystals found in the milk-like secretion of a cockroach.
The research, which began in 2016, examined how the Pacific beetle cockroach stores and delivers nutrients to its developing young. Although the subject may sound strange, the study involved advanced protein chemistry, structural biology and X-ray crystallography.
The Cockroach That Produces ‘Milk’
The species studied is commonly known as the Pacific beetle cockroach. Unlike most cockroaches, it gives birth to live young rather than laying eggs.
The mother produces a nutrient-rich, milk-like secretion that is consumed by developing embryos. Inside the embryos, the fluid forms tiny protein crystals that provide concentrated nutrition during growth.
Researchers discovered that these crystals can store a remarkably high amount of energy in a very small space. Their earlier study estimated that a single crystal could contain more than three times the energy of an equivalent mass of cow’s milk.
However, the discovery does not mean that cockroach milk is ready to become a new dairy product. The importance of the research lies in understanding how nature efficiently packages and transfers nutrients.
What Scientists Discovered
The international research team used X-ray crystallography to examine the protein crystals at an extremely detailed level. They determined the crystal structure at a resolution of approximately 1.2 angstroms.
The study found that the crystals contain specialised proteins that bind to fats. These proteins are arranged closely together, allowing the crystals to store substantial nutritional material within a very small volume.
This structure helps explain why the secretion is so energy-dense. The crystals function as a compact nutritional package for developing embryos, demonstrating an unusual biological method of storing and delivering energy.
The findings may also offer insights into protein structure, nutrient storage and biological energy systems. Nevertheless, researchers have not suggested that humans should consume cockroach milk as a practical food source.
