The Delhi government inaugurated a waste-to-compressed biogas (CBG) plant and integrated CBG-CNG fuel station at Ghogha Dairy, marking a strategic step toward cleaner city infrastructure. The facility, developed under a 2022 MoU between the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), will process 100 tonnes of municipal solid waste per day and generate 4 tonnes of gas.
By converting waste into energy, the plant addresses dual challenges: urban waste management and sustainable fuel generation. City officials noted that, despite Delhi housing a large cattle population with substantial dung output, no dairy-linked biogas plant existed until now. The new facility promises to not only better manage solid waste but also reduce reliance on conventional energy sources.
Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta described the inauguration as a new chapter for rural Delhi and part of a vision for a garbage-free capital. She contrasted current efforts with past deficiencies in waste infrastructure and underlined the plant’s role in promoting cleanliness and cleaner energy in dairy zones.
The plant’s strategic value lies in turning a liability into an asset, transforming waste into usable gas for fuel, potentially benefitting dairy operations, urban transit, and municipal services. Its success could also spur replication across other dairy clusters and metropolitan areas seeking circular economy solutions.
