Evonik Launches Lypron to Improve Ruminant Feed Efficiency

Evonik Animal Nutrition has expanded its ruminant nutrition portfolio with the launch of Lypron, a rumen-protected lysine solution designed to improve livestock performance, enhance feed efficiency and reduce dependence on expensive protein ingredients.

Developed in collaboration with French coating technology specialist Sipena, Lypron is designed to deliver metabolizable lysine to ruminants beyond the rumen, helping animals utilize essential amino acids more effectively. Sipena will exclusively manufacture the product for Evonik.

The launch strengthens Evonik’s range of nutritional solutions for livestock producers seeking to improve productivity, manage feed costs and develop more sustainable feeding strategies.

Rumen-Protected Lysine Supports Animal Performance

Lysine is an essential amino acid and one of the limiting nutrients in ruminant diets. An inadequate supply of metabolizable lysine can restrict the ability of animals to use other dietary nutrients efficiently and achieve their production potential.

Lypron is formulated to provide a reliable supply of metabolizable lysine, enabling nutritionists to balance amino acid levels more precisely. This approach can help improve nutrient utilization and support livestock performance while reducing unnecessary dependence on costly protein-rich feed ingredients.

The product is intended to complement existing nutritional solutions, including Evonik’s established Mepron product. Together, these solutions support a more comprehensive approach to amino acid balancing in ruminant diets.

Marion Hax, Head of the Specialty Nutrition Product Line at Evonik Animal Nutrition, said the launch expands the company’s ruminant nutrition offering and strengthens its ability to help customers pursue improved animal performance alongside more sustainable feeding practices.

Potential to Reduce Feed Costs

Feed represents a significant operating expense in livestock production, making efficient nutrient use an important consideration for dairy farmers and other ruminant producers.

By supplying lysine in a rumen-protected form, Lypron is designed to help nutritionists formulate diets that meet animals’ amino acid requirements without relying excessively on expensive protein ingredients.

The approach could provide greater flexibility when selecting feed ingredients and adjusting dietary formulations according to nutritional requirements and market prices.

The economic benefits will depend on factors such as the animal’s production stage, existing diet composition, feed ingredient costs and the appropriate inclusion rate of the product. Producers and nutritionists would need to evaluate these factors when assessing its contribution to farm profitability.

Environmental Benefits Through Nitrogen Management

Beyond its potential economic advantages, Lypron is designed to support feeding strategies that improve nitrogen utilization. Better amino acid balance can enable the formulation of lower-protein diets while maintaining appropriate nutritional support for production.

When dietary protein exceeds an animal’s requirements, more nitrogen may be excreted rather than used for productive purposes. Improving the balance between amino acid supply and animal requirements can therefore help reduce nitrogen losses, depending on the overall diet and production conditions.

Claudia Parys, Global Head of the Ruminant Business at Evonik Animal Nutrition, said the product helps nutritionists optimize amino acid supply, improve productivity and reduce reliance on excess dietary protein. She highlighted the growing economic and environmental importance of more efficient protein nutrition.

For dairy and livestock operations, these approaches can form part of wider efforts to improve feed conversion, manage nutrient losses and strengthen resource efficiency.

Supports Low-Protein and Reduced-Soy Diets

Lypron also provides nutritionists with greater flexibility to formulate low-protein diets and feeding programmes with reduced reliance on soy-based ingredients.

The product is described as a non-GMO solution, addressing requirements in markets where GMO-free production is important. This feature may be relevant to feed manufacturers and livestock producers operating under specific customer preferences or sourcing requirements.

However, the overall nutritional performance and sustainability of a feeding programme depend on the complete diet, ingredient sourcing, animal requirements and farm management practices.

Implications for the Dairy and Livestock Industry

Evonik’s Lypron launch reflects the wider shift towards precision animal nutrition, in which diets are formulated to meet specific amino acid requirements rather than relying solely on higher crude protein levels.

For dairy producers, improved nutrient utilization could help balance feed expenditure with productivity goals while supporting more efficient nitrogen management. The practical results will depend on how the product is incorporated into individual feeding programmes.

As livestock producers face pressure to manage input costs and environmental impacts, rumen-protected amino acid solutions are becoming an important area of nutritional innovation. Lypron adds another option for nutritionists seeking to improve the efficiency of ruminant feeding systems.
