For generations, Indian households have often warned against consuming fish and milk together, with traditional beliefs associating the combination with skin problems, digestive disorders and even poisoning. However, modern medical understanding does not support the idea that combining the two foods creates a toxic reaction.
There is no established scientific evidence that eating fish and drinking milk together is inherently poisonous for healthy individuals. Both foods provide important nutrients and can form part of a balanced diet.
Allergies and intolerance are the real concerns
Medical experts say problems experienced after consuming fish and milk together are more likely to be associated with an individual’s existing allergy or intolerance rather than a toxic interaction between the foods.
Milk and fish are recognised food allergens. Allergic reactions can range from relatively mild symptoms such as skin rashes and vomiting to serious breathing difficulties and, in severe cases, anaphylaxis.
Dr Rajiv Ranjan Prasad, former state president of the Indian Medical Association, said people with allergies to either food can experience reactions regardless of whether the foods are consumed separately or together.
Similarly, people with lactose intolerance can experience bloating, abdominal pain and diarrhoea after consuming milk. The presence of fish does not cause lactose intolerance, nor does combining the foods make milk toxic.

Dineshwar Prasad, former principal of Patna Government Ayurvedic College, explained that some Ayurvedic schools consider the combination potentially difficult for certain people to digest because both foods are protein-rich.
However, digestive discomfort experienced by some individuals should not automatically be interpreted as evidence that the combination is poisonous.
This distinction is important when separating traditional dietary practices from scientifically established food-safety risks.
Fish provides important nutrients

Dr Satish Kumar of Nalanda Medical College and Hospital noted that fish such as salmon, sardines, trout, tuna and mackerel are particularly good sources of omega-3 fatty acids.

Fish also provides several micronutrients important for normal bodily functions.
According to paediatrician Dr Vivekanand, fish can supply vitamin D, iodine and selenium, which contribute to bone health, thyroid function and metabolism.
Regular fish consumption has also been associated with benefits related to cognitive and eye health, although nutritional benefits can vary depending on the species of fish, preparation method and overall diet.

While cultural and dietary traditions can influence what people choose to eat, medical experts emphasise the importance of distinguishing a culturally discouraged combination from a medically dangerous one.
