Fonterra Raises 2026–27 Farmgate Milk Price Forecast to NZ$9.75 per kgMS

New Zealand dairy cooperative Fonterra has increased its forecast Farmgate Milk Price midpoint for the 2026–27 dairy season from NZ$9.50 to NZ$9.75 per kilogram of milk solids (kgMS), reflecting improving international demand for key dairy commodities. Announced on 30 October 2026, the revision highlights stronger market conditions for whole milk powder (WMP) and skimmed milk powder (SMP), alongside sustained purchasing activity across major importing regions.

The cooperative has also narrowed its forecast price range from NZ$8.50–NZ$10.50 to NZ$9.00–NZ$10.50 per kgMS. The adjustment provides an improved outlook for New Zealand dairy farmers as the new production season progresses, although final returns will remain dependent on global supply, demand and commodity market movements.

According to Fonterra Chief Executive Richard Allen, stronger demand for milk powders has been the primary driver behind the revised forecast. The cooperative reported that WMP and SMP prices on the Global Dairy Trade (GDT) platform increased by approximately 5% and 7%, respectively, over the previous two trading events.

Global Dairy Demand Supports Improved Milk Price Outlook

International dairy markets have played an important role in supporting Fonterra’s improved forecast. Purchasing activity across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa and China has contributed to stronger demand for New Zealand dairy exports.

The cooperative also reported a well-contracted sales position despite record milk collections, providing greater confidence in its revised price outlook. Strong export commitments and improving commodity prices have helped support the decision to increase the forecast midpoint.

Whole milk powder and skimmed milk powder remain important products within New Zealand’s dairy export portfolio. Their applications across food manufacturing, nutritional products and consumer markets make them significant contributors to international dairy trade.

However, global dairy markets continue to face uncertainties associated with geopolitical developments, economic conditions and changing production levels across exporting regions. Fonterra stated that it will continue monitoring factors that could influence global milk supply and demand throughout the season.

Higher Milk Payout Forecast Offers Support to Dairy Farmers

The upward revision is relevant to dairy producers managing the financial requirements of modern milk production systems. Farmers across New Zealand continue to deal with operating expenses associated with supplementary feed, pasture management, farm infrastructure, labour and debt servicing.

Environmental compliance requirements, particularly those relating to freshwater management and emissions, also influence farm investment decisions and operating budgets.

An improved farmgate milk price forecast can strengthen expected farm revenues, helping producers plan expenditure, manage financial commitments and consider investments in productivity improvements.

Nevertheless, the forecast midpoint should not be interpreted as a guaranteed farm payment. Individual farm profitability will depend on milk solids production, operating costs, financing arrangements and the final price achieved during the season.

Organic Milk Price Forecast Also Records an Increase

Alongside the conventional milk price adjustment, Fonterra has increased its forecast Organic Milk Price midpoint from NZ$14.30 to NZ$15.25 per kgMS.

The forecast range has also been revised upwards, moving from NZ$13.30–NZ$15.30 to NZ$14.50–NZ$16.00 per kgMS.

The increase highlights the continued market opportunities for certified organic dairy production. Organic milk products serve specialised consumer and food manufacturing markets where production standards, certification and product differentiation influence purchasing decisions.

The higher organic milk price forecast also provides an indication of the commercial value associated with specialised dairy supply chains and differentiated milk production systems.

Processing Flexibility Remains Important for Dairy Export Competitiveness

Fonterra continues to emphasise manufacturing flexibility as a means of capturing value from its milk supply. Its ability to adjust product allocations according to market demand is important for managing changing prices across milk powders, dairy fats, cheese and other dairy ingredients.

The cooperative’s manufacturing network and international customer relationships allow it to respond to different purchasing requirements while managing seasonal milk collections.

The latest forecast adjustment demonstrates how international commodity demand, export commitments and processing strategies influence farmgate milk price expectations. For New Zealand’s dairy industry, maintaining competitive export performance while delivering sustainable returns to milk producers will remain an important priority throughout the 2026–27 season.
