Ahmedabad: R S Sodhi, MD of the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation – apex body of all the milk unions of Gujarat – has been elected as president of the Indian Dairy Association – dairy industry’s apex body in the country. Sodhi is the first dairy professional from the federation and second from Gujarat’s dairy sector to be elected as president of IDA.

RS Sodhi, managing director (MD) of the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) – the apex body of all the milk unions of Gujarat – has been elected as president of the Indian Dairy Association (IDA) – dairy industry’s apex body. Sodhi is the first dairy professional from the federation and second from Gujarat’s dairy sector to get elected as president of the nearly seven decades old IDA.

Before Sodhi, late Dr Verghese Kurien, hailed as Father of India’s White Revolution, had served as the president of IDA between 1964-65. He was then working with the Amul Dairy. Dr Kurien who was earlier serving as general manager of Amul Dairy, in 1973 founded GCMMF that markets dairy products under brand name – Amul, now India’s largest FMCG brand. “It is an honour for me to represent the IDA because Dr Kurien, my mentor, held the same position in 1964 and now I have got the opportunity to lead this institution after 58 years,” said Sodhi, adding that Indian dairy industry is ‘Atmanirbhar’ as far as dairy industry is concerned and has potential to become “dairy to the world”.
Of the 1,724 votes that were polled for the post of IDA president, Sodhi who was contesting against IDA’s outgoing president Dr G S Rajorhia, garnered 1,201 votes in his support. Results of the voting which began on July 23 and continued till July 29 were declared on Saturday noon. In June last year, Sodhi was unanimously elected to the Board of International Dairy Federation (IDF) during the general assembly of IDF. The Indian national committee of India had nominated Dr Sodhi’s name to IDF which was unanimously accepted.
