In the last two years, Himachal Pradesh has installed 222 Automatic Milk Collection Units (AMCUs), marking a major stride in modernising its dairy sector. These units automate the milk collection process, providing accurate measurements of quantity and quality and ensuring greater transparency and fairness in farmer payments.
This initiative, supported by the state government, is part of a wider vision to strengthen rural livelihoods and promote sustainable dairy practices. By eliminating manual errors and standardising data collection, AMCUs provide a transparent pricing mechanism that directly benefits small and marginal dairy farmers.
The adoption of AMCU technology is also improving the traceability of milk, enhancing quality assurance across the supply chain. Farmers can now receive instant receipts and digital records, ensuring accountability and confidence in transactions. Moreover, this system supports cooperatives by simplifying record-keeping and reducing administrative overheads.
However, the full potential of AMCUs depends on adequate infrastructure, such as stable electricity, efficient transport, and training for farmers to use the digital systems effectively. The government is expected to intensify awareness and capacity-building programmes to bridge this gap.
Looking ahead, Himachal Pradesh aims to expand the network to over 500 AMCUs within the next five years. This expansion will further strengthen the state’s dairy value chain, enabling farmers to access premium markets and contribute to a more resilient rural economy.
By integrating technology with traditional dairy farming, Himachal Pradesh is setting an example for other states to follow — blending innovation with inclusion to create a fairer, more productive dairy landscape.
