In a strategic push to uplift the rural economy, the Madhya Pradesh government is intensifying efforts to expand its dairy footprint across the state. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has directed the Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Department to integrate half of all villages into the formal milk collection network, signaling a major step towards inclusive dairy growth.
Strengthening the Dairy Cooperative Model
Addressing a high-level review meeting, CM Yadav highlighted the formation of 381 new milk cooperative societies, now linked to 9,500 local milk producers. This cooperative expansion is part of a larger mission to enhance the economic stability of farmers and cattle-rearers, while boosting dairy infrastructure.
These efforts are aligned with Union Minister Amit Shah’s vision of creating a more profitable dairy ecosystem. Notably, the Jabalpur and Gwalior milk unions have recorded a marked increase in milk procurement and have revised procurement rates by ₹2.5 to ₹6 per litre, directly benefiting farmers.
Investments in Breed Quality and Infrastructure
The state’s dairy roadmap includes modernising animal husbandry practices through breed improvement programs, model farm development in collaboration with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), and the promotion of high-quality dairy products under the Sanchi brand—Madhya Pradesh’s flagship milk label.
The establishment of a Heifer Rearing Centre under the Bhopal Milk Union marks a key initiative to raise healthier, high-yield cattle. Additionally, milk unions have received ₹2 crore in working capital each to settle dues and ensure timely farmer payments—a critical move to sustain producer confidence.
Enhancing Rural Livelihoods
By expanding access to the formal milk supply chain and strengthening cooperative dairy systems, the Yadav-led government aims to make dairy farming a more lucrative and dependable income source for rural households.
“This is not just about milk—it’s about creating resilient rural economies where farmers are empowered and incentivized,” said a senior dairy development official.
