Mother Dairy Wins Two Kyoorius Awards for Degradable Milk Pouch

Mother Dairy has won two Blue Elephant Awards at the Kyoorius Design Awards 2026 for its naturally degradable milk pouch, recognising the packaging innovation for both sustainable design and responsible packaging.

The packaging innovation received recognition in the ‘Sustainable Design’ category under the Design in Action track and the ‘Responsible Packaging Design’ category under the Design Craft track.

The dual awards highlight the design approach behind adapting a familiar everyday milk pouch while addressing concerns around packaging waste and end-of-life disposal.

The Kyoorius Design Awards, established in 2013, recognise design excellence across areas including visual communications, marketing, architecture and interiors. The Blue Elephant is positioned as a recognition of creative achievement within its respective category.

Mother Dairy’s Degradable Milk Pouch

Mother Dairy introduced what it described as India’s first naturally degradable milk pouch in soil in June 2026, initially launching the Cow Milk variant across Delhi NCR.

The new packaging uses a degradable material designed to transform into bioavailable wax, which can then be broken down naturally by microorganisms present in soil into natural elements.

According to Mother Dairy, the innovation is intended to address the challenge of fugitive plastic and contribute to a cleaner ecosystem while maintaining the familiar format used by consumers.

The company said the pouch has been designed so that consumers do not need to change how they store or handle their milk. This approach aims to combine environmental considerations with convenience and everyday usability.

Packaging Innovation Meets Brand Design

Alongside the new pouch, Mother Dairy has also introduced a refreshed visual identity for its milk portfolio in collaboration with brand consultancy Landor.

A key element of the redesigned packaging is the ‘Note of Care’, a brand device inspired by Mother Dairy’s iconic logo. The concept uses everyday messages such as reminders to drink milk or prompts to get home safely, reflecting the brand’s positioning around care.

The refreshed packaging also incorporates cleaner typography and brighter visual elements to create a more contemporary and consistent appearance across the milk portfolio.

Focus on Practical Sustainability

Jayatheertha Chary, Managing Director, Mother Dairy, said the two Blue Elephant awards recognise the company’s approach to developing innovations that can operate at scale while remaining practical for consumers.

The company’s packaging initiative represents an effort to address plastic-related environmental concerns through a product format already familiar to milk consumers.

For the dairy industry, packaging remains an important part of the value chain, particularly because milk pouches are used at very large volumes in everyday consumption. Innovations aimed at improving the end-of-life characteristics of such packaging could therefore have implications beyond individual product lines.

Mother Dairy’s recognition at the Kyoorius Design Awards also demonstrates the growing intersection between packaging technology, sustainability and consumer-centric design in the dairy sector.

By combining a degradable packaging material with a refreshed visual identity, the company is positioning its milk packaging around both environmental considerations and everyday consumer experience.
