Partnership Aims to Boost Milk Production and Farmer Incomes
To strengthen dairy development in the North-East, the Mizoram Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Limited (Mulco) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB). The agreement focuses on increasing milk production and improving dairy processing capacity across Mizoram.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Cooperation Minister P.C. Vanlalruata, reflecting strong state-level support for cooperative-led dairy growth. Officials from the Government of Mizoram, NDDB and Mulco formally executed the agreement.
NDDB to Prepare State-Specific Dairy Development Plan
Under the White Revolution 2.0 programme of the Ministry of Cooperation, NDDB will design a comprehensive dairy development plan for Mizoram. The plan will address productivity gaps, strengthen milk procurement systems and modernise processing infrastructure.
Moreover, NDDB will provide technical guidance and advisory support in key areas such as breeding, feeding and capacity building. Mulco will implement the proposed interventions on the ground. As a result, the programme aims to create a structured and sustainable dairy ecosystem in the state.
Addressing Mizoram’s Low Milk Output
According to the Bureau of Animal Husbandry & Statistics (BAHS) 2024–25, Mizoram recorded the lowest daily milk production in the North-East, at 64.4 thousand kilograms per day. This figure highlights the region’s limited access to organised dairy systems and modern production practices.
However, the NDDB–Mulco partnership seeks to reverse this trend. Through targeted planning and cooperative support, the initiative aims to improve milk yields and increase farmer participation in organised markets.
Focus on Livelihoods and Modern Practices
Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Lalduhoma said the MoU would enhance milk production while improving income opportunities for livestock farmers. He added that Mizoram has suitable land resources and a strong tradition of animal husbandry.
Therefore, by adopting modern technologies and improved management practices, the state can unlock its dairy potential more effectively. He also proposed the creation of a Project Monitoring Unit (PIU) to ensure timely execution and accountability.
Strengthening Cooperative-Led Growth in the North-East
Overall, the MoU aligns with national efforts to expand organised dairying in underdeveloped regions. By combining NDDB’s technical expertise with Mulco’s cooperative network, the initiative aims to build a resilient dairy value chain.
Additionally, the programme is expected to support rural livelihoods, reduce milk deficits and strengthen farmer incomes in Mizoram over the long term.
