Dairy Industry Expo 2023

Lucknow, June 25 – Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has credited the state’s progress in animal husbandry and dairy to the structured reforms under the Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan, while highlighting long-standing neglect by previous administrations.

Speaking on the broader vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s agricultural development goals, CM Yogi stated, “The immense possibilities in the sector of animal husbandry and dairy were never honestly taken forward by previous governments. As a result, the good quality of livestock here began getting lost.”

He added that the state, which once had abundant fertile land, water resources, and high-quality livestock, witnessed significant deterioration due to a lack of structured support. “Now, the result of the work done in the last 10–11 years in this sector can be seen in UP,” he affirmed.

“Even the immense possibilities in the sector of animal husbandry and dairy…were never honestly taken forward by previous governments.”

Key Aims & Context

  • The Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan, part of the wider Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan, targets science-led improvements in farming, including dairy and animal husbandry.
  • Agriculture scientists are now visiting farms directly under the campaign’s “Lab‑to‑Land” mission to bring advances directly to rural communities.s
  • This marks a shift from earlier policies that Yogi says overlooked animal husbandry, leading to a deterioration in breed quality, which is now replaced with a renewed focus and strategic investment.

Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan: Focus Areas in Dairy and Livestock

  • Mobilization of agricultural scientists to implement “Lab-to-Land” solutions
  • Investment in breed improvement and veterinary outreach
  • Promotion of modern cattle shelters and disease control infrastructure
  • Reviving milk production through organized dairy societies

The initiative aims not only to modernise agricultural practices but also to reintegrate animal husbandry into mainstream rural development efforts. Officials have noted that UP’s dairy sector, once fragmented and informal, is seeing a surge in cooperative activity, AI-driven livestock monitoring, and increased milk procurement capacity.

Since 2014, Uttar Pradesh has expanded its dairy infrastructure, launched integrated livestock development programs, and supported farmers through improved market linkages. Government sources report that several districts, once reliant on small-scale, unorganized dairy sales, have now been incorporated into formal milk routes with access to chilling plants and veterinary services.

Experts suggest that sustained progress could position Uttar Pradesh among India’s top states in terms of organized milk supply chain performance, especially if support continues for breed conservation and cold chain logistics.

Potential Scenarios & Impacts

Scenario Details Implications
1. Strengthened Breed Quality & Milk Yield Continued focus on cattle health, shelter modernisation, and vet support may reverse past losses and improve yield. It could increase UP’s dairy output and competitiveness, benefiting farmers financially.
2. Expanded Dairy Cooperatives Launch of new milk societies leveraging the Kamdhenu Yojna and “digital dairy” initiatives. More farmers with market linkages, higher MSPs, improved incomes.
3. Technology Adoption Surge Partnerships with research institutes and the expansion of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) network enable real-time milk tracking and disease prevention technology. Positions UP as a leader in precision dairy farming, attracting agritech investment.
4. Political & Economic Ripple Effects A successful campaign ahead of UP’s 2026 assembly polls strengthens the BJP’s rural outreach, while cross-sector integration enhances the agricultural economy.

The Chief Minister’s remarks underscore a continued political and economic commitment to leveraging dairy as a pillar of rural upliftment in the state’s long-term growth strategy.

Looking Ahead

As UP leverages its fertile land, water resources, and improved livestock management, the Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan aims to blend research, infrastructure, and grassroots implementation. With a strengthened dairy sector set to broaden economic growth and farmer welfare, this initiative could redefine rural livelihoods in India’s largest milk-producing state.
