BL Agro is set to invest ₹1,500 crore in its biotech subsidiary Leads Genetics to develop an integrated dairy and cattle genetics ecosystem, combining genomics, IVF, embryo transfer, animal health and advanced breeding technologies.
The investment is aimed at accelerating genetic improvement, increasing cattle productivity and strengthening domestic capabilities across India’s dairy breeding value chain. The company plans to bring breed improvement farms, IVF-ET, Multiple Ovulation Embryo Transfer (MOET), pathology and genomics laboratories under an integrated model.
At its Centre of Excellence in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, Leads Genetics is targeting production of 15,000 embryos per month by the end of 2027. The company also plans to expand the model to Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh, subject to ongoing discussions with the respective state governments.
Focus on Genomics and Advanced Breeding
The investment announcement was made during the Cattle Genomics Summit 2026 in Bareilly, where scientists, breeders, researchers and industry stakeholders discussed genomics, IVF, advanced sequencing, genetic evaluation and data-driven breeding.
The event also marked the arrival of the first Zebu-optimised bovine SNP chip at Leads Genetics. The company demonstrated next-generation sequencing using the Illumina NovaSeq X platform, highlighting the growing role of genomic technologies in cattle selection.
A genomic SNP chip allows animals to be evaluated across thousands of genetic markers. This can support the identification of cattle with desirable traits such as milk production potential, fertility, growth, health, heat tolerance and resistance to ticks and parasites.
Unlike conventional breeding, which generally requires multiple generations and progeny information, genomic selection can help identify animals with promising genetic potential at an earlier stage. When combined with IVF, embryo transfer and sex-sorted semen, these technologies can potentially accelerate the multiplication and distribution of selected genetics.
Building Domestic Genetic Capability
Uttar Pradesh Animal Husbandry Minister Dharampal Singh highlighted the importance of improving per-animal productivity while reducing dependence on imported high-end germplasm.
Leads Genetics said its breeding programme is focused on producing elite bulls, embryos and sexed semen domestically while also supporting indigenous cattle breeds. The company believes that improving milk output per animal could also contribute to lower methane emissions per litre of milk produced.
The developments showcased at the summit are also linked to the India-Brazil cattle-genetics partnership, formalised through an agreement in Brasília.
Expected Benefits for Farmers
BL Agro Chairman Dr Ghanshyam Khandelwal said farmers remain central to the company’s 360-degree circular economy model. According to the company, genetically selected cows are expected to produce 40–60 litres of milk per day, with the objective of improving farm-level income opportunities.
The company said the ₹1,500 crore investment will also support capacity building, scientific dairy practices and employment opportunities for rural youth.
Leads Genetics is simultaneously working on scaling embryo-production technologies. Dr Sarvannan Durairaj, Head of IVF-MOET at Leads Genetics, said the Bareilly Centre of Excellence is being developed to produce 15,000 embryos every month by the end of 2027.
The broader strategy reflects an increasing focus on genetics as a component of India’s dairy productivity agenda. By combining genomic selection with reproductive technologies and scientific farm management, Leads Genetics aims to make selected cattle genetics available at a larger scale and support breeding programmes better suited to Indian climatic conditions.
If the planned capacity and geographic expansion are achieved, the initiative could create an integrated model covering genetic evaluation, breeding, reproduction and animal health within a single ecosystem.
